Consider the women
What understandings, questions and hopes do we have about women in Christianity?
The explorations and reflections offered on this day will help us see the women in the scriptures in the context of their times so we can better appreciate what their stories are telling us for today.
From the very first book of the bible, women like men are said to be bearers of God’s own image and likeness. Women are essential to the biblical stories and to God’s self-revelation.
Jesus talked with women, befriended, affirmed and liberated them, revealing God’s tender compassion towards women and all people. The New Testament challenges cultural expectations that stereotyped women and made them invisible.
Jesus’ challenge to Simon the Pharisee: ‘Do you see this woman?’ (Luke 7:44) is a vital question for today. There is a relationship, both then and now, between ‘seeing’ and valuing women and welcoming Christ.
